The internal garages in the townhouses are built with very thin walls that loose heat rapidly. And the covering of the garage roof (originally asbestos tiles) frequently lets cold air into the lounge floor and hallway. Conversion of the garages to living space solves these problems, but alternatives are available for people who want to keep the garage space garage-y. These include insulating the garage ceiling and walls and draughtproofing the garage door.

Contact these homeowners if you would like to see how they did it:

1) Insulated walls

  • Nick insulated the garage walls himself using a stud wall construction. He's happy for you to arrange a time for your visit to see how it was done. nbterry1@gmail.com. Westover Gardens.
  • Rob did the same thing but with a slightly different design. He used the same materials as Nick (PIR insulation he picked up from Gumtree and wood bought online from Wickes). Rob also insulated the garage ceiling after having the asbestos boards professionally removed. Come and take a look. vo2max@hotmail.co.uk. Northover Road.

2) Draughtproofed garage door

  1. Tim and Jacqui are happy to show you their approach to keeping the draughts out of the garage and to talk about the floor-insulation measures they have completed. E-mail them on timothy@habgoodhall.plus.com to arrange a visit sometime during the last three weeks of November. Northover Road.
